Restormel Castle

Crowning a hill, commanding a major crossing of the River Fowey, the Castle stands within a deep and wide dry moat. The circular wall forms a large 13th Century Shell Keep, with domestic buildings inside and a large, rectangular chapel protruding outside it. The Keep is entered through a strong gateway that projects into the moat. The original Castle was a wooden stronghold with many important buildings protected by only a timber palisade. The later stone castle with impressive rooms and large windows was more a symbol of status and power than a fortress.
